Assel received her master in Science in Drug Chemistry from Newcastle University, UK on the following topic: "Discovery of Antibiotics from Novel Actinomycetes" under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Allenby (Demuris Ltd., UK) and Dr. Michael John Hall.

The main aim of her project was the identification and isolation of natural compounds exhibiting antibacterial activity from actinomycetes. Fermentation of the microorganisms was performed followed by isolation and purification of compounds with antibacterial activity employing a variety of techniques, including extraction using adsorption resin, liquid-liquid phase extraction, HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and size exclusion chromatography. The novelty of the purified bioactive compounds was determined by comparison of the accurate mass obtained through MS (Mass Spectrometry) analysis with the Dictionary of Natural Products. Two different strains were investigated, where one of them produces a novel wide-spectrum antibiotic compound as it exerts antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Assel is now working on the electrochemical activation of benzoic acid derivatives within the Lam group.
